NOHGA HOTEL AKIHABARA TOKYO is pleased to present "Replicant 4", a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Ayako Fudamoto.
Using her own distinct methods to create forms reminiscent of food samples, Fudamoto uses her work to question viewers about modern Japanese food culture, production systems, and the locus of life itself. The title Replicant refers to a series structured in a buffet format; this exhibition marks its fourth iteration, featuring an array of (imitated) dishes from various culinary genres.
The diversity of food choices in Japan, and specifically in Tokyo, is unique even by global standards. As a result of extensive trade and the movement of people, the city is overflowing with restaurants. This reflects a cultural landscape that incorporates diverse traditions without being limited by specific religious or ethnic boundaries.
This exhibition showcases the sense of unease inherent in the constant presence of food through a Japanese lens, from linkage, which uses the peculiar mass-production system of "convenience store bento" (a staple of Japanese infrastructure) as a motif, to Kubizuka, an attempt to visualize the life and death underlying dashi culture.
After experiencing the exhibition, viewing the streets of Akihabara through the lens of "food" may reveal what truly constitutes "Japanese" style and highlight the culture rooted in the local community. We hope this exhibition, seen through Ayako Fudamoto's sharp perspective, serves as an opportunity to reconsider food and culture once again.
