■Artist's statement

Measured sketching has long been a tried and tested method for architects to experience architectural spaces and physically master their design. Using a tape measure to check every dimension was an effective way of understanding architecture and developing a sense of scale. Few people still do this today, but in an age where 3D scans and countless high-resolution photographs can be taken on smartphones in less than ten seconds, the experience of actually getting a sense of the space right then and there seems to have become rather rare because of its simplicity.
It is only when you try to draw that you realize you have not actually seen anything. It is difficult to even begin to draw a single line until you have decided on all the aspects - what to draw as the main subject, what composition to draw, what scale to draw. I believe that this difficulty of drawing is one of the few means I have left to carefully consider a space.
As designers we tend (and need) to think using separate drawings, separating layers such as architecture, interior, and furniture. However, the experience of a space is essentially a holistic one, felt right there in a place. Furthermore, the food eaten there and even the journey to the place determine how the space is felt. Through my sketches, I try to capture the quality of the space by recording all these elements in a cross-sectional way.

ARTIST PROFILE

Kei Endo

KEI ENDO graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2017 with a degree in architecture. She is an architect and color designer. After working for the architectural design firm RFA, she joined the environmental color design firm CLIMAT. ENDO also serves as a part-time lecturer at Tokyo Metropolitan University. Her "measured sketches", which she began as design research, have become very popular on social networking sites. She is the author of "TOKYO HOTEL SKETCH" (Gakugei Shuppansha). Sher writes the columns "Architectural Masterpieces from Measured Sketches" in Kodansha's "with" magazine, and "Underpass Architectural Illustrations" in the online media BUNGA NET.

A collection of watercolor sketches created by popular architect and color coordinator, KEI ENDO, who stayed in word-class hotels, where she measured and drew out their spaces. This is an illustrated book that records in detail the materials, colors, and measurements of items ranging from floor plans to interiors, amenities and food. This book dissects the charms of hotel spaces, from minimalist to luxury hotels in Tokyo, even its suburbs.

KEI ENDO has measured various things and drawn them in beautiful transparent watercolor sketches. The objects she has measured are diverse, ranging from cakes and parfaits to buildings and urban landscapes. The things we use in our daily lives and on our travels, and the things that have a different sense of scale, are equally expressed through the technique of measured sketches, which makes one realize a fresh way of seeing things. A collection of 24 specially selected works on postcards, including new sketches.

What color is your heart right now?
In this fast-paced world of information, do you take time to quietly face yourself and confirm your true feelings?
I have been trying to find my own heart by pouring acrylic paints on canvas and creating various colorful expressions.
I am moved and healed by unexpected expressions and colors, and I feel very empowered by how these colors themselves express my heart and its healing.
I have been invited to exhibit my works at the NOHGA HOTEL UENO TOKYO, where it feels as if they will be shown to the world.
I hope to offer viewers the experience of finding colors that touch their heartstrings through my paintings.
I hope they can face their hearts through painting. To never stop feeling.
Like colors flowing freely and shining brightly.

ARTIST PROFILE

Hiromi Nagi

Born in Chiba, Japan in 1983, Hiromi Nagi started studying painting at the age of 30 and has exhibited her watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings of people, animals, and plants at venues such as department stores and galleries.
In 2019, Nagi moved from Tokyo to Iwate Prefecture to paint in a natural setting, and currently creates works while alternating between there and her Tokyo studio.
In 2024, she encountered the "Dutch pouring" technique using a hair dryer, which became a turning point for her to start producing abstract paintings as well.
Under the theme of "returning to her true self," she has been trying to liberate herself by finding expressions that move her heart through colors created by chance, and through dialogue with the paint.

About the Exhibited Works

Painting is really just fun for me.

This includes placing colors on the surface, and vigorously drawing on paper with pencil.
Sometimes I can't help but smile with joy - this would describe how it feels for me at times.
The unique shine and texture of oil paints layered on the canvas.
The uncertainty of things not going as planned.

But what is most important is the evolution of my thoughts and the daily experiences I have with the pictures.
Through my daily learning, I now feel more vividly what is called wisdom.

Based on this thinking, my ultimate goal in painting and exhibiting these pictures, and of me writing this text, is to bring peace to people.

A certain shape appears, and the next day it disappears.
I want to keep the colors fresh, but worrying about it can make me lose momentum.
I wonder if shapes are even necessary, so I just apply colors. I then stop the brush.
Are there shapes that need to be painted? What does it mean to paint in the first place? I wonder what is the good in doing so.

If words are used, then that something that lies beyond cannot be seen.
I assume that if I listen carefully enough, then I won't have any questions. I won't have any words either.
I won't place value on something or try to understand it, I won't even feel the need to say "yes, I know!"

For me, drawing is about thinking about life, and I'm very grateful for the fact that I'm able to talk about it using words like this.

Naoko Fukui

Naoko Fukui is distinguished for brightly colored painting and accessories decorated with shiny materials such as beads and spangles.
One of her installations was awarded by Taro Okamoto Award of Contemporary Art, which she decorates the space and makes it into a magical room.
With decorations and paintings, and the combination of plane with space, she presented viewers with a more familiar way to enjoy art.
Her colorful outlines which heighten the decorations and the plane surface are recognized as her painting style.
On the other hand, we could still find the hidden dignified strength in her painting, without failing to capture any twinkling of the moment.
She puts all of her personal life experiences and memories to her artistic creation.
Memories from the nature, memories from her grand mother who has a talent for stitching, memories from traveling and bright memories of touching moments.
Not only paints on canvas, she has been using every conceivable materials to spell her memories on, such as cloth, beads, wood, pottery and so forth.

About the Exhibited Works

The exhibited works use materials that could be found anywhere outside, but that no one notices, such as stones, road signs, and signboards. One could say these materials borrow fragments from what makes up the city.
Now, if human memory is also an element making up the city, then I think that the modest events no one remembers quietly but surely also make up that city, just like concrete, glass or signboards.
These works attempt a sort of collection of short stories that have been pieced together by borrowing fragments of form and meaning from familiar things, and overlaying another story on top.

【Artist Statement Keiko Yamada】

I want viewers to find that I draw in detail and that I carefully observe and draw, and I want them to be happy. I get nervous when I'm drawing for open call, but I'm happy when I think about how I felt when I was selected. I feel blue when I was not selected. But when it's like that, I think I'll do my best because there's a next time.
My dream is to have a solo exhibition in Ginza, Tokyo someday. I want many people to see my paintings.

"Uncanny Valley" refers to the boundary at which human beings harbor an emotional disgust as advancing technology brings the appearance and movement of robots infinitely closer to that of human beings. The difference between the canvas that the artist painted with their own hands and the canvas achieved through high -resolution printing is indiscernible without close inspection, evoking the perils of dichotomy inherent in "human and machine "or"original and reproduction".

About the Exhibition ABLE ART JAPAN

Drawn brightly with water-based pens, many of the artworks by recommended artist, Keiko Yamada, depict motifs found in nature such as plants and sea life. The rhythm of the meticulous strokes drawn across the entire surface gives them life, almost as if we can hear the heartbeats of the creatures. The freshness viewers feel is no doubt, from the bending of the sharp lines, the contrasting colors, and the brightness felt in the use of light and dark, that make up her detailed form of expression. Yamada senses the air and sounds invisible to the eye, replacing these as strokes and colors, as though she were talking to these creatures. There is a unique narrative-like world view expressed in her works.

About this Exhibition - Artist, Erika Kusumi
For some time, I have been creating works surrounding large-scale themes, such as life and death, destruction and regeneration, global cycles, and the state of human society. With the recent spread of the novel coronavirus, I have witnessed the impact that battling against the virus has had on human society, and I feel my own consciousness and values being shaken day after day. In everyday life, it is essential to be aware of the existence of one's own life and the lives of others within society as a whole. Yet, as the non-human world continues as it always has, I feel both hope and despair. Amid this situation, I present artwork centered on the division between the world and human society, "the state of a species of egoistic human beings", "the state of human beings in this scenario", and thoughts on hope and salvation.

Erika Kusumi

Born and based in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Erika Kusumi creates digital collages by digitally processing photographs she has captured, cut out and overlaid. By reconstructing actual landscapes visible to everyone, Kusumi expresses an unrealistic world that exists simultaneously as an extension of reality and everyday life. In addition to appearing in exhibitions and art fairs in Japan and abroad, Kusumi has also produced numerous commission artworks. She received the 2020 Sapporo Culture Encouragement Award and the Dogin Art and Culture Encouragement Award.

【Exhibition description -Organizer, 3331 Arts Chiyoda】

This exhibition features artwork from Houxo Que's The Uncanny Valley series, produced between 2012 and 2015. The artwork is produced through the repetitive act of copying paint strokes onto canvas using high -resolution print methods, the result of which is then further painted and reprinted onto canvas.

As the spread of COVID -19 restricts physical "contact", and amidst the accelerating progression of digital technologies, the boundary between we humans and machines is increasingly blurred. We hope this exhibition becomes an opportunity to experience the perspective of Houxo Que, who captures our current er a sharply.

Houxo Que

Encountering graffiti in his teens, QUE began his artistic activities mainly on the street walls. From then on, he has been known for his fluorescent paintings and installations using black lights. He has also presented his creative process as live painting shows many times. There are hidden messages. Marcel Proust called these "signs". Events lose their original purpose, and a completely different object or meaning appears. There is a definite sense of "joy" here, even if at first, we don't understand what it is - this is the mystery I want to capture. Within flowing clouds or passing wind, or even just looking into the mirror at yourself, underneath the sign exists something completely different. Most likely, you and I have had to work hard at making these discoveries.
I have experienced actual events like reading a girls' comic through winter in Germany, my friend and I facing each other with blue trays at the canteen in Greece, or the moon in Scotland shifting the moment I looked away from it. And like that, things resembling imaginary celestial bodies, including unreadable comics or mirrors showing nothing, have continued to appear to me over the years.

【Exhibition description -Organizer, 3331 Arts Chiyoda】
Yuuki Horiuchi gathers ideas from slips in our perception and understanding, creating installations and two-dimensional works that offer us a sense of poetry.
The pieces in this exhibition use mirrors and comics as motifs, reassembling reflections of light, speech bubbles, and lines of effect through the filter of Horiuchi's eyes. It may seem as though mirrors and comics have nothing in common, yet both do not reveal objects as they truly appear. In fact, they are related in that they both strip away an object's surplus of information, causing it to appear flat on the surface.
When we see something, we immediately recognize it as "〇〇". This is, however, simply our understanding of it based on the definition provided by general knowledge and context. In actuality, it could be that we are not taking in its existence entirely.
The world's phenomena are richer and more complex than what we make of them. Horiuchi's works carry a slight humor, while shaking up what we think we are seeing, giving us the chance to connect to the secrets of our world.

We are living in the world of words. Words make the objects possible for us. The meaning of words attach the outline to the objects, and we live inside of this prescribed Matrix. My primary interest resides in the place where threads are connected with words. 'Text' derives from Latin 'texere' ('to weave') and textiles appear, before texts, and function as a linguistic system for communication and recording.

My work is to choose from several hundred naturally dyed silk threads and weave them together. For one piece of my textile, there are from thousand to tens of thousands of selections of different colors of threads required. All my choices are recorded in this fabric. My 'text' is written here with my threads. Like a human appears due to the choice of words he or she makes, like choices that we make shape today's me and you, like 'Me' is a record of the choices I made, what appears in this fabric made of thousands of threads is what I am.

Nevertheless, when I confront what I have woven, I encounter something that is difficult to grasp. There is Me in this text(ile) but also something that exists at the distance. I am the one who makes the choice of the threads, I am the weaver of the threads and the creator of the fabric. It seems that I am the subject and the sole authority here, but actually it is not only me who chooses the threads. The Threads themselves choose the choice I make.
I pick up the thread, but in the same time it grasps me. I am the subject of the thread, but thread is also a subject that operates with Me.　(Yasuaki Kuroda)

About the Exhibited Works

Being deeply connected to a place. NOHGA HOTEL cherishes the fantastic experiences that are created from that. Since the Edo period, Ueno has been a flourishing center of shitamachi (low-lying eastside downtown) culture. Its creative culture today brings together traditional craft culture and creators with a new aesthetic. This is also the location of nationally important cultural institutions such as Ueno Park, art galleries and museums. The food culture here takes the form of longstanding restaurants and bars, as well as the bustling Ameyoko market street. Celebrating our 1st year anniversary on 1st November, we have collected these 111 pieces. These photos taken by Ueno locals, professional photographers, and our very own guests from NOHGA HOTEL UENO, represent and show various perspectives of our beloved neighborhood. We are delighted to share "the moments of Ueno" through this exhibition. Cherishing these charm of the neighborhood and its culture, NOHGA HOTEL UENO will continually offer one-of-a-kind experience and grow with the local neighbors for the future together. About the Exhibited Works

To this day, Masanori Tomita has continued to work with oil paint, creating artworks that can be seen as both abstract and representational at once. At first glance the paintings appear abstract with the application of multiple layers of oil paint, yet concrete images such as human forms and hands eventually start to emerge from the surface. Tomita states that he extracts actual phenomena and landscapes existing in reality that he sees with his own eyes, which he then attempts to develop into the form of paintings. One of the characteristics of Tomita's paintings is their use of color, whose layers can be seen almost as a harmony of discordance. The paintings created in this way force us to see another world that is a counterpart to the one we see every day in reality. The expressions ‒ such as an imaginary line between the stars that brings to mind images beyond the night sky, or the shaping of landscapes that do not exist in reality ‒ may even recall the depths of space captured in traditional Chinese landscape paintings (known as 山水画 or Shan Shui style).

When we face Tomita's paintings, we become overwhelmed by their physical presence created by the multiple layers of oil paint. Yet appearing in contrast to this strong physical quality are empty and hollow images that emerge from the layers of paint. Suddenly the images shift into something else, as if we are sensing an illusion. This puts us in direct line with the paintings through which the artist makes full attempt to capture the moment before or after standing or falling; or heading towards something. Perhaps viewers are offered the chance to experience the back of reality ̶ in other words, a reality different from actuality.

Masanori Tomita (born in 1989, currently lives in Tokyo) is known mainly for his paintings. Their characteristics include dull and heavy tones, thick textures, layers accumulated through time, the perception of the process of taking apart a picture, and objects that serve merely as vehicles for the possibilities of transformation. Tomita is overflowing with energy in his power as a painter. The wind and waves are rising. The eye is shifting. The hand is waving. It is burning in flames. It is being torn apart. It is being connected together. It is being mixed together and mixed apart. It might seem like a sudden statement, but if I were a novelist, I would most likely ask Tomita to design my book cover. The barcode would be in the way, so I would remove it. It would be fine if my name and title were buried deep in the paint. I would go so far to say that I would not mind if the reader's eyes were stolen by the cover, forgetting to open the book in the first place.

ARTIST PROFILE

Born in 1989 in Kumamoto Prefecture. Graduated in 2013 from Tokyo University of the Arts Oil-Painting Department.

Awarded the NOHGA Prize during the 3331 ART FAIR 2019 (Tokyo, held March 2019). Currently lives in Tokyo.

About the Exhibited Works

(1) flowers that were arranged（2019） [Material: Dried flower]
People have always been attracted to the natural objects of flowers and green. There are flowers when celebrating people and flowers when you are sad. Why is it what attracts people? The shape that people can not create can fascinate.
Lines and regular patterns written at equal intervals have always been in close contact with human life. I made the work a strange sense of unity created by the act of bringing this relative nature and art together.

(2) artificial flower that were arranged_plastic garden（2018） [Material: Artificial flower]
The presence of artificial flowers feels very strange. They are closer to the real flowers, and the sense of weirdness has increased further. In order to shape the sense of weirdness between "the real flowers and the artificial flowers", a part of the artificial flower was melted to turn it back to the material, and I made the artificial corner which is not in the natural world.

Flowers are a mysterious material that attracts people just though being lined up. When I saw it react to people, I thought that I was reacting to the presence of flowers rather than looking at the ""shape"" of flowers.
In other words, I thought that the attractiveness of the flower does not require a shape and that its presence is more important, and I thought that it could be possible to create a floral element by aligning and existing the artificial shapes created by humans.

I said that it was beautiful when I saw the decoration in which the flowers are lined up, but I was disappointed if I realized that it was an artificial flower. You can be impressed by the fresh flowers, although it is disappointing to be impressed by the plastic flower. That is very interesting. I made artificial flowers small in petal units to eliminate plastic feeling, I artificially cleaned up neatly and collected them with an array needle. All I did the actions was artificial. I would like to see how people react from it.

"After studying design in Japan, I studied at the Netherlands 'Design Academy Eindhoven'. While studying abroad, I experienced Dutch conceptual design and trained at 'Studio Richard Hutten' 'MVRDV'. After returning home, we set up 'studio note', we mainly design products, interior design of 'CLASKA Room 701' etc. We do a variety of design activities. Participating in '21_21 DESIGN SIGHT (Design Ah! Exhibition, Rice Exhibition, Measuring Exhibition, ZAKKA -Goods and Things Exhibition)' and exhibitions at galleries, solo exhibitions and other activities as Artist."

The main piece for Naoki Sato's solo exhibition held in 2017, "Unexplored Tokyo: There, it has grown", is a charcoal drawing nearly 1.8 meters tall and at its current stage, 120 meters in length. Naoki Sato has barely been able to separate from this continuous work, but for this occasion, he displays in addition his new ambitious drawings made on 870 millimeter square plywood boards. The artist's KIDO PRESS lithograph artworks derived from this project will also be on display.

INSPIRATION = Improvisation: Marking #1 /#2
Appeared at the ""SOUND ON PAPER, Music Notation in Japan"" exhibit directed by John Cage at the Japan House Gallery while I was in New York City in 1981.
I suddenly received a request present my work at the exhibition, so I submitted 4 pieces. Surprisingly, the ""graphic score"" of my piece ""Markings #1"" piece was used for the invitation cards, posters, and catalogs. I was also given the honor of performing at the opening ceremony, where my piece was also displayed. Hearing the familiar voice of Shigeko Kubota cheer ""Bravo!"" amongst the applause is still a cherished memory.
After viewing the catalog, when John Cage asked me, ""Why did you name your song 'INSPIRATION'?"" I heartily replied, ""That is because it instantly appeared like an exclamation mark, the moment I start writing it. Therefore I could continue to draw out infinite possibilities..."" He said ""That should've been called, 'Improvisation.' In fact, I would like to apologize for making that mistake in your description, Akio.""
In the 70s, while exploring ""Graphic Score"" as a composition method, I created what could be called an ""Afterword."" After reexamining those pieces over the years, no matter how much I grow, they still encourage me. Even if it was a dead end...

ARTIST PROFILE

Naoki Sato
Born in Tokyo in 1961. After graduating from Hokkaido University of Education, he studied educational sociology and linguistics at Shinshu University. He completed the Mokuma Kikuhata painting class at Bigakko. In 1994, he served as art director to ""WIRED"" magazine when it was first published in Japan. In 1998, he established Asyl Design (now Asyl). From 2003 to 2010, he served as producer for ""Central East Tokyo (CET),"" a combined art, design, and architecture event that promoted the ""Legal Squatter's Ring."" In 2010, he participated in planning the 3331 Arts Chiyoda art center. His work is included in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and he has won many prizes in Japan and abroad. In 2012, he took the opportunity to focus on painting as part of the ""Trans Arts Tokyo (TAT)"" art project. He also participated in events such as the ""Odate and Kita-Akita Art Festival 2014"". He was a band member for the 2017 ""Sapporo International Art Festival,"" where he served as head of the design project. His collections include "Unexplored Tokyo: There, It has grown" (Tokyo Kirara Co., Ltd) and he authored a book entitled "Never Disappear: Between Art and Design" (Shobunsha.) He is the 3331 Design Director, and a teacher at Bigakko, where he provides a class entitled ""Painting and Beauty, Image and Technique." He is also a professor at Tama Art University.

Akio Suzuki
Born in1941. Based in Kyotango-City, Kyoto. Undertaking a series of "Self-Study Events" , Suzuki's journey as a ""quester after sound and space"" started in 1963. In 1970, he invented an echo instrument which he named Analapos. In 1978, participating in the Festival d'Automne in Paris, he began Conceptual Performance. Suzuki then constructed the Hinatabokko no kukan (Space in the Sun) in 1988, consisting of two huge parallel walls between which the artist can sit all day to purify his hearing by listening to the reflected sounds of nature. The oto-date project, which is to find echo points on the streets, started in 1996 and has now been held in over more than 30 cities around the world. He is also known to perform by drawing sound out of various everyday materials and often collaborates with musicians who play improvised music. He has been invited by international exhibitions, programs, and leading music festivals such as Documenta 8 (Kassel, 1987), Donaueschingen Musiktage (Germany, 1998), the British Museum (UK, 2002) , MUSEE ZADKINE (Paris, 2004) , AV Festival (UK, 2014), and Documenta 14 (Athens, 2017).
