NOHGA HOTEL has been involved in several initiatives that emphasize our relationship with art, and the artist-in-residence program is one of them. We are honored to welcome Naonori Yago as our resident for June.

I am a graphic designer and have always thought that design is meant to be strong, correct, perfect from all angles, and something that leads many people. However, I have recently come to think that design is very weak. It may be wrong, imperfect, have errors and ugly parts, just like a living thing. At least the kind of design I can create is like that. "Powerless" is appropriate than "weak", perhaps. Maybe it is stronger to accept powerlessness and to exist in this world without power.
I started to have this urge to draw aged creatures that have lived many years with "powerless strength". I wanted to depict creatures with faded color and pale skin, its feeble blood vessels showing through from under its skin, proudly displaying its powerless way of life.
For this exhibit, I decided to paint my own work on canvas for the first time. It may seem a little strange for a graphic designer to work on canvas, but I hope many people will have the opportunity to see my work.
