Collaboration

Custom-made products made with one of Japan's known traditions, Lacquerware.

We have had the honor to have SyuRo, a collaborator of NOHGA HOTEL UENO TOKYO and NOHGA HOTEL AKIHABARA TOKYO, to create custom-made hangers and clothing brush for all of our properties.

Here at NOHGA HOTEL KIYOMIZU KYOTO, SyuRo has designed products for us in collaboration with craftspeople of lacquerware in Kyoto.

Lacquering is one of the traditional finishing techniques in Japan, and the more it is used, the smoother it becomes. Our collaborator in Kyoto is Makino Urushi Kogei, located in the south of Uji established over 80 years ago.

Makino Urushi Kogei is a group of lacquer painters passing down the beauty of lacquerware for generations. Known to have repaired renowned temples and Buddhist ritual implements, interior designs, and artworks, the company is led by the third owner, Toshiyuki Makino, and the 22-year-old successor, Kota Makino. The group consists of experienced lacquerware experts to young novices.

With "NOHGA HOTEL" printed on each hanger and brush, products are carefully brushed with lacquer from Japanese persimmon tannin, which has antibacterial and antiviral effects.

Lacquer is painted and dried three times. Cured for a long period of time, the products are made with extra care. The sleek yet somewhat nostalgic lacquer coating keeps clothes in the right shape, adding a traditional touch to your experience.
