A Kyo-machiya where love for pottery resides

Toutensei Kawasaki is a pottery shop, located just a stone's throw away from NOHGA HOTEL KIYOMIZU KYOTO.

The shop has been involved in pottery making of Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware since the Edo period. The family moved into a Kyo-machiya back in the Meiji period, now selling porcelains and ceramics from all over Japan.

Currently, the eighth-generation owner, Takashi Kawasaki, selects Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware tea tools, as well as tea pots, cups, dishes, and other works of Arita ware, Mino ware, Banko ware, and Shigaraki ware.

Some are handmade created by known artists and craftsmen, but also offering machine-made pottery for everyday use.

As Mr. Kawasaki believes that a product's worth is determined based on how often it is used, he selects the shop's products by its practicality, affordability, and playfulness.

The second floor is often used for tea ceremonies, exhibitions, and other events hosted by the locals to spread the love for pottery.
